OPENING: September 2nd, 7:00 PM
The exhibition will be opened by Dr. Júlia Bacsek, art historian
After the successful exhibition in Balatonboglár, the exhibition continues on the North Bank with new images. Péter Weiler and the balatonoffseason Instagram page have teamed up for an exciting artistic collaboration. Based on Dorka Bartha's photos documenting the built environment of Lake Balaton, Péter Weiler creates new artworks that evoke the events of the 1989 summer of regime change and the atmosphere of the era.
Dorka Bartha, who runs the Instagram page balatonoffseason, travels around the sleeping settlements of the lake on a retro Csepel bicycle during the off-season to photograph winterized vacation homes, closed langoss grills, restiks, and deserted beaches. She documents the rarely seen, yet beautiful face of Lake Balaton, and her images are permeated by the peace and quiet beyond the summer hustle and bustle.

One of Weiler's central themes is Lake Balaton, where he spent all his childhood summers. This love for the lake and its memories is also a reflection of a collective self-awareness that connects all Hungarians from the heart. Of the artist's childhood summers, 1989 was the most memorable, because the political winds of the regime change and German reunification could be felt the most in the social resorts, campsites, and beaches. It was a strange mix of a normal summer at Lake Balaton and a turning point in world history. The GDR secret service is still observing its citizens vacationing at Lake Balaton, while leaflets suggesting the Pan-European Picnic border-breaking are being distributed in the campsites. With his new paintings, Weiler searches for the ideal of freedom and the free everyday life offered by summer.
parallel. Life goes on, the lake water is lukewarm, summer is ending, but nothing will be the same as before.
